Syngenta Trial Sites

Brits Trial Site

Syngenta, has continued to collaborate with InteliSeed to launch a second trial site in Brits, North West Province, South Africa

In continuous efforts to ensure development of a vibrant portfolio of vegetable seeds to serve the South African farming community, Syngenta and Inteliseed have invested in a site dedicated to trialing suitable materials for the South African market. The motivation to have this site was in order to develop dedicated trialling of varieties in key vegetable growing regions within the country. Syngenta’s core business is the creation of profitable and sustainable agriculture through provision of best quality hybrid seeds. Syngenta, being a research and development company has ambitions to continue growing its portfolio and hence bring best in class varieties to the market.

Brits is a key vegetable production region, and therefore the selection of this as a site was important to ensure sufficient coverage of the South African key vegetable growing regions. It was also critical to be able to have trials running in different climatic zones to ensure thorough investigation of our varieties’ technical attributes so as to place them suitably in their relevant zones within the market

Our objective is to do our first phase screening on the site. Thereafter we will do adaptability trials at various strategic growing locations throughout the country. Following these series of trials, the varieties will then go commercial.

The site will also be utilised to train our internal and external stakeholders on newly launched varieties during different stages of the development process. This will ensure continued development of the knowledge of key internal and external players on our portfolio. This will help to continue to develop us internally as well as ease the introduction process of our varieties into the market via our external stakeholders.

The decision to invest in dedicated trial sites is a commitment to the South African growers that we are committed to our purpose “Bringing plant potential to life”

Limpopo and Lowveld Trial Sites

In accordance with the need for targeted development activities as relevant as possible to our market, Syngenta has taken the decision to start trailing activities in the Limpopo and Lowveld area of the country. These sites are in collaboration with our partner, Inteliseed. The site promises to contribute to the development of the vegetable seeds assortment within South Africa.

The decision on these sites was taken in consultation with our partners to ensure that we executed trailing activities in a manner that mirrored our ambition. This ambition stems from our purpose to “bring plant potential to life” where we lean on the potential of specific geographies to trial varieties that will provide value to our ultimate stakeholder – the grower.

The sites are well positioned within the country to be able to provide much needed results on varieties that will be tested in the environment. These results will enable us to ensure that we serve the South African and Southern Africa market with best-in-class varieties to ensure requisite value to our growers.

We will also take advantage of this resource to be able to introduce stakeholders to our genetics with technology that has been set up to allow us to achieve this.

Our objective is to carry out screening trials within suitable environmental conditions that will allow us to receive excellent results from the varieties allowing us to be able to accurately understand the performance of each crop planted on the site. This will provide clear guidance to be able to take decisions on suitable varieties for the market.
