Celest® seed care presented to young growers at PSA workshop
Celest® Seed Care at Grower Workshop with Potatoes South Africa
Potatoes South Africa’s recent workshop held in Christiana from 9-11 April was attended by approximately 40 young farmers and provided an opportunity to learn about the potato industry and farming with potatoes. Industry partners such as Wes-Vrystaat Moerkwekers, Potato Certification Service and Syngenta were also invited to present key topics and demonstrations to the delegates.
Kerien van Dyk, Syngenta product manager for potatoes and fruit, presented an overview of factors that should be considered for effective tuber treatment in order to ensure optimal disease management. An integrated approach which includes knowledge of the target disease, the right product and quality application is necessary.
The focal point of Kerien’s presentation was the epidemiology and management of black dot (Colletotrichum coccodes), silver scurf (Helminthosporium solani) and black scurf (Rhizoctonia solani). Celest® works on multiple points in the life cycle of these pathogens, including spore germination and mycelial growth. However, because it has contact action and is not systemic, Celest® will only control diseases carried by the seed.
Theunis Meiring, Syngenta technical field expert for potatoes and fruit, provided a practical tuber treatment demonstration with Celest®. He advised delegates that good application is an integral part of the management process and includes aspects such as well-calibrated application equipment and ensuring proper coverage of tubers.
